Blessed Family Moments

Warning: this blog contains religious jargon and boring family memories. If you don’t mind, please read on. As many of you know (or don’t know), I have been called to be the Young Women’s Ward Camp Director. This is fine. But, for some reason it has evolved into being the Laurel’s advisor meaning I “get to” attend the weekly activities and teach twice a month. I just do what I am told and try to be optimistic. So…I had to teach yesterday. The lesson was “Encouraging Enjoyable Family Activites”. I read the title of the lesson to Mitch in my preparations and his response was “Ooohh….good luck with that. I was bored as soon as you told me the title.” In the end, the lesson actually went quite well. For this I am grateful as some of my previous lessons were teetering on the edge of disastrous. Some of the girls shared their fun and not-so-fun memories of past family activities and inevitably I was reminded of my own favorite family moments.

Please indulge me as I share just one. Try to visualize as best as possible: I think I was a senior in high school and we were gathered for family prayer before leaving for the day. As we are kneeling down about to start, a little mouse runs right through the middle of us. I jump on the couch with Mom, Valynne and Ashley and we all start screaming / laughing hysterically. Dad (also screaming like a girl) jumps to his feet and begins hopping from one foot to the other trying to scare the mouse to run towards Todd who has grabbed a small pot and starts diving to cover the mouse with the pot. He dives, he misses. He dives, he misses. He dives, he misses. At this point we are more laughing hysterically than screaming as we watch Todd make a fool of himself. He finally catches it and covers it with the pot. We were all in shock just looking at each other and still laughing, then dad just kneels down and says seriously, “ok let’s pray”. I will end the story there to hopefully avoid emails or comments from animal rights activists. Don’t worry…we were not too cruel. This story probably has no meaning to you unless you know my dad and can imagine him screaming so high-pitched. It was hilarious, and I love reenacting it out for people. If you ask me I will share it with you.

On the note of family activities…I am going to St. George with my parents and Ashley this weekend. Who knew I could get so excited for St. George? I think I am desperately seeking a sign of warmer weather and a chance to get away…even if it is only 5 hours away. I am even abandoning my poor husband (since he can’t miss school) for the chance to get away. This is what happens when you have no money and never take any vacations. Thank goodness for family right?
