Food Co-op

DD - Days 4-7
While I don't like the recipes as much as I had hoped, I do feel like I learned a lot. For the past few days I have looked at which purees she put in specific meals. Then I used my own recipe for a similar meal and put the recommended puree in. This seemed to work great. If anything, it has given me an idea about what purees work for what types of foods. Believe me, I am not going to waste all of those purees in the freezer!

The past couple of days I made tacos with sweet potatoe puree and stroganoff with flaxseed meal and cauliflower puree. To me they tasted great. I still feel excited about the whole process.

Okay, onto another subject. This last week I joined a food co-op. My friend had mentioned it and so I decided to try it out. The basics of a food co-op: it is a non-profit organization where people group together to buy local produce in a group discounted rate and then it is divided among the people. By "local" I don't think it is just from Utah but nearby states as well. The pros: You get a ton of produce for a great deal and it hasn't been sitting in a truck or on a shelf for days. Cons: You don't get to pick your produce, but it is 50% fruit and 50% vegetables...and honestly I kind of like the surprise. It forces me to be creative in my cooking. It is $15 a week and you take your laundry basket and fill it up with what they have for you on Saturday mornings. You don't have to do it every week, just the weeks you sign up. They ask you to volunteer at least once every 2-3 months. Not bad.

This past week I got a big bag of green grapes, package of purple grapes, 8 apples, 8 japanese pears, 1 honeydew, 1 bunch of bananas, 1 head of broccoli, package of mushrooms, 1 squash/pumpkin, 2 cucumbers and 4 tomatoes. I am excited but will see how the selection is as it starts to cool down.

Life in general has been pretty crazy busy, but isn't it like that for everyone? I am excited for the fall. I drove through the canyon a few days ago for work and the leaves were changing. It is so beautiful!

Kristen, where do you sign up or find out about a co-op? It sounds very interesting, and something that might be great for our family.

Lot's of people are doing bountiful baskets and they love it!! they love the variety but are perplexed when they get comquats or something weird like that. I havent done it but maybe i will? Keep me updated on how you like it. ANd i think the puree in your own recipes is a great idea! i know my kiddos do not eat veggies. Gookie had a pea and totally spewed up dinner! She is very funny with textures.
